Inlays and Onlays

What Is The Treatment Procedure?
Inlays and onlays usually take two appointments to be fitted. During the first appointment we will remove any of the decay from the affected tooth, and the tooth is then shaped ready for the inlay or onlay. After shaping, we then take an impression of the tooth so that the inlay or only fits perfectly onto the tooth.
After the inlay or onlay arrives back from the dental laboratory during the second appointment, we then apply the inlay or onlay to the tooth. It will be permanently bonded to the natural tooth and then polished and shaped.

Inlays And Onlays For Repairing Cavities
At Hacton Dental Care we offer dental inlays and onlays for our patients. Both treatments are used to restore decaying teeth, and are a restoration treatment that is halfway between fillings and crown treatment.
They are generally used when the teeth have a moderate level of decay, where the tooth may be slightly fractured. The inlay sits between the cusp on the surface of the tooth. Dental onlays work in much the same way, but are used to cover larger areas such as the full tooth cusp.
Both onlays and inlays are larger than a normal filling but are not as large as a crown would be. They can be made from a range of materials including gold, ceramic and composite materials.
Popular choices include resin and porcelain, as they are aesthetically pleasing and can blend in with the natural teeth. They are bonded onto the decaying tooth and are very durable and long lasting.

How Long Do Inlays And Onlays Last?
Both inlays and onlays can last for a long period of time but this depends on a number of things. The material used is a huge factor, as some materials are more durable and longer lasting than others. Other factors are how well the patient cares for their teeth after treatment.
