Dental problems / Crooked or crowded teeth

Crooked or crowded teeth.

Crooked or crowded teeth aren't just cosmetic - they're harder to clean and often lead to gum disease and uneven wear over time. The good news: modern orthodontics is more comfortable and more discreet than it used to be.

Five common causes.

Genetics

Most crooked teeth come down to the natural relationship between jaw size and tooth size. If your jaw is on the smaller side and your teeth are on the larger side, there isn't enough room for them to sit straight.

Childhood habits

Long-term thumb-sucking, dummy use or tongue thrusting can affect how the bite develops in childhood, sometimes resulting in crookedness or an open bite.

Loss of teeth

Losing a tooth (especially without replacing it) lets the neighbouring teeth drift, often making them appear more crooked over time.

Adult shifting (relapse)

Even if you had braces as a teenager, teeth can drift back over the years, especially if retainers were stopped early. One of the most common reasons we treat second-time orthodontic patients.

Wisdom teeth coming through

Wisdom teeth pushing through in your late teens or twenties occasionally cause front-tooth crowding. Debated clinically, but in some cases it does happen.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to straighten my teeth?

Invisalign starts at £3,500 (Lite) and £4,200 (Full), fixed braces from £5,450, with Clear Correct and lingual braces quoted at consultation.

How long does treatment take?

Most adult cases finish in 6 to 18 months, with mild cases as short as 6 months and complex cases extending to 24 months.

Are clear aligners as effective as fixed braces?

For mild to moderate cases the results are comparable, while for complex cases (severe crowding, rotations, big bite work) fixed braces remain the gold standard.

Can adults get braces?

Yes - over half our orthodontic patients are adults, often returning patients whose teeth have shifted since their teenage braces.

Will I need a retainer afterwards?

Yes - every orthodontic treatment we do includes a retainer plan, because without it the teeth will gradually drift back to their original position.

Are orthodontic consultations free?

Yes, initial orthodontic consultations are complimentary and include a 3D digital scan of your teeth.
