Dentist examining patient teeth at routine check-up

What is a check-up?

A check-up at Hacton Dental Care is a thorough examination of every tooth, every existing filling or restoration, the health of your gums, your bite and the soft tissue inside your mouth. It typically takes around 30 minutes for a new patient and 15 to 20 minutes for a routine review.

The point of a check-up is to catch small problems before they become big ones. Most patients leave with no treatment needed at all, just a clean bill of health and a date in the diary for six months' time.

Is a check-up right for me?

A check-up at Hacton Dental Care is the right call if you:

  • Are a new patient looking for a thorough first visit
  • Are a regular patient due for a routine 6-monthly check-up
  • Haven't seen a dentist in years and want a judgement-free first visit
  • Want oral cancer screening included as standard
  • Want a written estimate to take away rather than be sold treatment in the chair

If you're in pain or have a specific urgent concern, our emergency dentist appointments are the better starting point.

The Hacton Dental Care difference.

Genuinely thorough, not a 5-minute glance

Your check-up takes around 30 minutes, not the 5 to 10 minutes a high-volume practice manages. There's time to actually examine, to talk through what we find and to answer your questions properly.

Includes oral cancer screening as standard

Every check-up includes a soft-tissue and oral cancer screening, looking at the inside of your cheeks, your tongue, the floor of your mouth and your throat. Catching anything unusual early saves lives.

Two small x-rays as part of the new patient fee

The £50 new patient fee includes two small intraoral x-rays so we can see between and below the teeth, not just the visible surfaces. Other practices often charge for these separately.

Honest about what needs doing

We will tell you when you need treatment and when you don't. If a tooth can be watched for 6 months rather than treated immediately, we'll say so. The opposite of high-volume 'dentist always finds something' practice.

Same dentist appointment after appointment

You see the same dentist at every routine visit, so you get continuity of care, comparison photos year on year and somebody who actually knows your history.

Pressure-free environment

Nobody is going to upsell you anything at your check-up. Treatment recommendations come with a written estimate and you decide on your own time, not in the chair.

Hacton Dental Care dentist with nervous patient at a first visit

Anxious about your first check-up?

First check-ups at Hacton Dental Care are deliberately low-pressure, especially if it has been a while. There's no judgement about how long it has been since your last visit. We will go at your pace, talk you through everything before we do it, and stop if you need a break.

If anxiety has kept you away from the dentist for years, our nervous patient page explains the additional support available, including longer appointments and sedation options.
