What is specialist periodontics?

Specialist periodontics is the diagnosis and treatment of advanced gum and bone disease, delivered by a dentist with additional specialist training. Surgical pocket reduction, regenerative procedures, gum grafting and crown lengthening are the most common treatments.

Most gum disease responds well to non-surgical hygienist work in-house at Hacton Dental Care. Specialist referral becomes the right route when the disease has progressed beyond what routine treatment can stabilise.

When is a periodontist needed?

A specialist periodontist becomes the right route when:

  • Periodontitis has caused significant bone loss
  • Multiple teeth have become loose
  • Earlier non-surgical treatment hasn't stabilised the disease
  • Surgical pocket reduction or regenerative procedures are indicated
  • Gum grafting is needed (for receding gums or pre-implant work)
  • You've been told elsewhere your gums are 'too far gone' for routine treatment

For early-stage gum disease, our in-house hygienist service is the right starting point. Specialist input is typically reserved for cases that haven't stabilised with non-surgical treatment.

How specialist periodontal referrals work with us.

01

Initial assessment

Your Hacton dentist or hygienist diagnoses what's needed and explains the options.

02

Internal referral

Through our wider group, you're seen by an experienced specialist periodontist for assessment and treatment planning.

03

Coordinated treatment

The specialist and your Hacton clinical team coordinate your care, with progress reports back to your routine dental records.

04

Return to routine care

Once specialist treatment is complete, you return to your routine Hacton dentist and hygienist for ongoing maintenance.

How much does specialist periodontics cost?

Specialist periodontics is quoted case-by-case by the specialist after assessment. Treatment plans typically combine a surgical session with follow-up appointments and ongoing maintenance.

We offer 0% finance over 12, 24 and 36 months and members of the Hacton membership plan receive 10% off treatment where applicable.

Surgical pocket reduction

For deep periodontal pockets that haven't responded to non-surgical hygienist work, surgical access lets the specialist clean the deepest areas thoroughly and reshape the gum to reduce pocket depth.

Regenerative periodontal procedures

Where bone has been lost, certain cases respond to regenerative procedures using bone grafts, membranes or growth factor proteins to rebuild a small amount of the lost structure.

Gum grafting

For receded gums (often caused by aggressive brushing, gum disease or anatomical thinness), gum grafting moves healthy gum tissue from elsewhere to cover the exposed root surface.

Pre-implant soft-tissue management

For patients planning implants in cosmetically critical areas (front teeth), specialist periodontists can prepare the soft tissue to ensure the final implant looks natural at the gum line.

Crown lengthening

A surgical procedure to expose more of the natural tooth (used for cosmetic gummy-smile cases or for restorative work that needs more tooth height for a crown).

Coordinated with your routine care

The specialist and your Hacton clinical team coordinate your care, with progress reports back to your routine dental records and a return to your normal hygienist for ongoing maintenance.

Worried about losing your teeth?

Untreated advanced periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in UK adults, but specialist intervention significantly improves the long-term outcome. Lost bone doesn't regrow naturally, but progression can be stopped and stabilised.

Many periodontitis patients keep their teeth for life with proper specialist treatment and ongoing maintenance. The key is acting before the disease progresses further.

What is the difference between a periodontist and a dentist?

A periodontist is a dentist who has completed additional specialist training in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease and the structures supporting the teeth.

When do I need to see a periodontist?

You may need a periodontist if you have advanced gum disease that hasn't responded to routine hygienist treatment, significant bone loss, loose teeth or recession requiring grafting.

How are specialist referrals handled at Hacton?

Your Hacton dentist or hygienist makes the assessment and refers you within our wider group, with the same clinical team coordinating your care and ongoing maintenance.

Is periodontal surgery painful?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation available, with most patients describing manageable post-operative soreness for a few days.

Can advanced gum disease be cured?

Advanced periodontitis cannot be fully reversed (lost bone does not regrow naturally), but specialist treatment can stabilise the disease and stop further bone loss in most cases.

Will I lose my teeth without specialist treatment?

Not necessarily, but untreated advanced periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in UK adults and timely specialist intervention significantly improves the long-term outcome.

How long does specialist periodontal treatment take?

Treatment is typically delivered over several months including the surgical procedure(s) plus follow-up appointments and ongoing maintenance phase.
