What are white fillings?

A white filling is a tooth-coloured composite resin that's bonded directly to your tooth to repair a cavity, a chip or a worn area. The composite is built up in layers, hardened with a blue curing light and shaped to match the natural contour of the tooth.

Unlike old-style silver amalgam fillings, composite bonds chemically to the tooth, which means we remove only the decayed tissue rather than reshaping healthy enamel for mechanical retention. The result is a smaller, more conservative filling that blends invisibly with the rest of the tooth.

Is a white filling right for me?

White composite fillings are usually the right answer if you:

  • Have a small to moderate cavity that needs treating
  • Want a tooth-coloured result rather than silver amalgam
  • Have an existing amalgam filling you'd like replaced with composite
  • Have a chip or worn area that doesn't yet need a crown
  • Want a conservative, minimally-prepped restoration

If your cavity is large or the tooth has been root-treated, a crown or onlay may be a more durable long-term restoration than a filling.

How your filling appointment works with us.

01

Examination

We diagnose the decay or damage at your check-up and explain the options with a written estimate.

02

Local anaesthetic

The area is fully numbed before we start so the procedure is painless.

03

Decay removal

Only the decayed tissue is removed, conservatively, preserving as much healthy tooth as possible.

04

Composite placement

The composite is layered into the tooth in stages, sculpted to match the natural shape, and cured with a blue light.

05

Bite check and polish

The filling is shaped to match your bite and polished to a high shine.

06

Aftercare

Most patients can eat normally as soon as the anaesthetic wears off.

How much do white fillings cost in Hornchurch?

A "surface" refers to one face of the tooth (top, side, between two teeth). A simple cavity in the chewing surface of a back tooth is usually a one-surface filling.

Replacing an old amalgam filling with composite is charged at the same per-surface fee as a new filling. We offer 0% finance and a 10% members' discount.

The Hacton Dental Care difference.

No routine amalgam

We do not place silver-grey amalgam fillings as a routine matter. Every filling at Hacton Dental Care is tooth-coloured composite that bonds to the tooth.

Conservative, minimal-prep approach

Modern composite materials let us preserve more of the natural tooth than older amalgam techniques required. We remove only the decayed tissue, not healthy enamel 'for retention'.

Multi-shade matching

We use a multi-shade composite system, so the filling blends invisibly with the surrounding tooth from any angle, including the back teeth.

Replacing old silver fillings safely

If you'd like your old amalgam fillings replaced with composite, we follow strict protocols (rubber dam isolation, high-volume suction) to remove them safely.

Honest about lifespan and cost

A composite filling typically lasts 7 to 10 years compared to 10 to 15 years for amalgam, so we'll be straight about the trade-off and the per-surface pricing before we start.

Same dentist for every filling

You see the same dentist for every appointment, so the work is consistent and the colour-matching is judged by someone who knows the rest of your mouth.

Nervous about needing a filling?

The anticipation is almost always worse than the reality. The injection is the only moment of mild discomfort and we use topical anaesthetic on the gum first to soften it. Once you're numb, you genuinely won't feel the procedure itself.

If you're anxious, tell us at booking. We'll allow extra time, talk you through every step in advance and offer sedation if it would help. Most patients tell us afterwards that the appointment was significantly easier than they expected.

White filling questions, answered.

How much do white fillings cost in Hornchurch?

A one-surface white filling is from £195, two surfaces from £250 and three surfaces from £350 at Hacton Dental Care.

Are white fillings as strong as silver amalgam fillings?

Modern composite fillings are strong enough for most cavities including back teeth, although they typically last 7 to 10 years compared to 10 to 15 years for amalgam.

Is having a filling painful?

No - the area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic before any drilling, so the procedure itself is painless, with most patients reporting no real discomfort during or after.

Can you replace my old silver fillings with white ones?

Yes - we routinely replace amalgam fillings with composite using safe-removal protocols, charged at the same per-surface fee as a new filling.

How long do white fillings last?

A well-placed white filling typically lasts 7 to 10 years before needing replacement, with longer life possible on smaller fillings in lower-stress areas.

Will my white filling stain?

Composite can pick up some stain from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco over years, which we manage at routine hygienist appointments with a polish.

Why does Hacton Dental Care not use amalgam?

We don't use amalgam routinely because patients overwhelmingly prefer the tooth-coloured option, the bonded composite preserves more of the natural tooth, and the appearance is significantly better.
