When is an extraction needed?

A tooth extraction is the right call when a tooth genuinely cannot be saved by a filling, a root canal or a crown. Common reasons are severe decay, advanced gum disease, fractured roots, problematic wisdom teeth or orthodontic planning that needs the extra space.

We don't extract teeth that can be saved. If a more conservative option is realistic, we'll discuss it before extraction is on the table. And if extraction is the right call, we'll talk you through replacement options (implant, bridge, denture or no replacement) before anything proceeds.

Is extraction right for me?

An extraction is usually the right answer if you:

  • Have a tooth that genuinely cannot be saved with a filling, root canal or crown
  • Have a wisdom tooth causing recurrent infection, decay or alignment issues
  • Have a tooth with a fractured root or very poor remaining structure
  • Need a baby tooth removed for orthodontic reasons
  • Have a painful tooth that needs urgent attention

If the tooth can be saved with a root canal or crown, that's almost always the better option than extracting and replacing.

How your extraction appointment works with us.

01

Examination and x-ray

We assess the tooth and confirm extraction is the right call.

02

Local anaesthetic

The tooth and surrounding tissues are fully numbed.

03

Extraction

Most extractions take 5 to 30 minutes depending on the tooth.

04

Aftercare

Bite on a gauze pack for 30 minutes, avoid hot drinks and rinsing for 24 hours, take pain relief as needed.

05

Replacement discussion

If you're losing a tooth that needs replacing, we'll book the next consultation to plan an implant, bridge or denture.

The Hacton Dental Care difference.

Conservative-first approach

We don't extract teeth that can be saved. If a root canal, crown or other restorative option is realistic, we'll discuss it before extraction is on the table.

Honest about wisdom teeth

We will only recommend wisdom tooth removal where there's a clear clinical need (recurrent infection, decay, alignment issues). Many wisdom teeth are best left alone.

Comfortable throughout

Modern anaesthetic technique and gentle extraction methods mean the procedure itself is painless. Sedation is available for very anxious patients.

Replacement planning included

If you're losing a tooth, we'll talk through the replacement options (implant, bridge, denture or no replacement) before the extraction so you know the full picture.

Same-day or next-day for emergencies

For registered patients with a painful tooth, we'll fit you in the same day or next day. New patients can call to be triaged for the next available emergency slot.

Surgical when needed, in-house

Most surgical extractions (broken roots, impacted teeth) are handled in-house under local anaesthetic. We refer only the most complex cases out to oral surgery.

Nervous about having a tooth out?

The anticipation is almost always worse than the reality. With modern anaesthetic technique you genuinely won't feel the extraction itself, and most patients tell us afterwards it was easier than they expected.

For very anxious patients we offer oral or IV sedation, where you remain awake but deeply relaxed throughout. Tell us at booking if you'd like sedation considered as part of the plan.

Extraction questions, answered.

How much does a tooth extraction cost at Hacton Dental Care?

A simple extraction is from £185, a routine extraction from £250, complex from £350 and surgical from £450.

Is having a tooth extracted painful?

No - the area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic so the procedure itself is painless, with most patients reporting a few days of mild soreness afterwards managed with standard pain relief.

How long does an extraction take?

Most extractions take 5 to 30 minutes from anaesthetic to completion, depending on the tooth and how easily it comes out.

Will my extracted tooth need to be replaced?

It depends on the tooth - back molars often don't need replacing, while front teeth and key chewing teeth are usually replaced with an implant or bridge.

Do I need to take time off work?

Most patients return to normal activity within a day, with full healing taking 1 to 2 weeks - we'll advise you specifically based on your extraction.

Can you remove wisdom teeth?

Yes, most wisdom teeth can be removed in-house under local anaesthetic, with sedation available where helpful and referral to oral surgery for the most complex impacted cases.

Are extractions available on the NHS?

Hacton Dental Care is a fully private practice, so all extractions are privately funded with 0% finance and a membership plan available.
