What is specialist oral surgery?

Specialist oral surgery is the surgical work of the mouth, jaw and surrounding structures, delivered by a dentist with additional surgical training. The most common cases are impacted wisdom teeth, surgical extractions, apicectomies and biopsies.

Most surgical work is handled in-house at Hacton Dental Care. Specialist referral is reserved for cases where the extra training, equipment and clinical setting genuinely change the outcome and the safety profile.

When is specialist oral surgery needed?

A specialist oral surgeon becomes the right route when:

  • An impacted wisdom tooth is in a complex position close to a major nerve
  • A tooth is severely fractured below the gum line and requires surgical removal
  • Multiple difficult extractions are needed at the same time
  • A bone graft or sinus lift is more complex than routine implant cases
  • A biopsy of suspicious soft tissue is needed
  • Apicectomy (root-end surgery) is indicated for a failed root canal

For routine extractions and uncomplicated wisdom teeth, our in-house service is the right starting point and significantly less expensive.

The Hacton Dental Care difference.

Impacted wisdom teeth (third molar surgery)

Wisdom teeth that are impacted, growing at an angle, or close to the inferior alveolar nerve require specialist surgical removal under local anaesthetic with sedation, with significantly better predictability and safety than attempting in routine surgery.

Surgical extractions

Teeth that have fractured below the gum line, are heavily decayed, have curved or extra roots, or have failed root canal treatment often require a specialist surgical approach using small incisions and sectioning techniques.

Apicectomy (root-end surgery)

For teeth where standard root canal treatment has failed and retreatment is not possible, apicectomy removes the infected tip of the root surgically while preserving the rest of the tooth.

Biopsies and minor oral pathology

Suspicious mouth ulcers, lumps or white patches that don't resolve within 2 to 3 weeks may require a biopsy to rule out anything sinister, sent to histopathology with results back within 7 to 14 working days.

Surgical implant procedures

Complex implant cases involving large bone grafts, sinus lifts or zygomatic implants are often handled by specialist oral surgeons working alongside our implant team.

Coordinated with your routine care

Once surgical treatment is complete, you return to your routine Hacton dentist for any follow-up restorative work and ongoing care, with reports back to your routine records.

Nervous about oral surgery?

Specialist oral surgery sounds intimidating, and for very anxious patients it can be the source of significant pre-appointment worry. The reassurance is two-fold: the specialist setting is purpose-designed for these procedures with full sedation options available.

Most patients tell us afterwards the procedure was significantly easier than they had built up in their head. Talk to us about sedation if you're concerned: it's there specifically for cases like yours.

What is the difference between a dentist and an oral surgeon?

An oral surgeon is a dentist with additional specialist training in surgical procedures of the mouth, jaw and surrounding structures.

When do I need to see an oral surgeon?

You may need a specialist for impacted wisdom teeth, complex extractions, biopsies, apicectomies or surgical implant procedures - your Hacton dentist will tell you if specialist input is needed.

Is oral surgery painful?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation available, with most patients describing manageable post-operative soreness for a few days afterwards.

How long does it take to recover from oral surgery?

Recovery depends on the procedure - most patients return to normal activity within a few days, with full healing of the surgical site taking 1 to 2 weeks.

Do you handle wisdom teeth in-house?

Most uncomplicated wisdom teeth can be removed in-house at Hacton Dental Care under local anaesthetic, with specialist referral reserved for impacted, deep or nerve-proximate cases.

Can I have oral surgery on the NHS?

Hacton Dental Care is fully private and our specialist referrals are also typically private; NHS oral surgery referrals are handled separately through your GP or NHS dentist.

How are specialist referrals coordinated?

Your Hacton dentist makes the assessment and refers within our wider group, with reports back to your routine dental records and a return to your normal dentist after specialist treatment.
