What are crowns and bridges?

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged tooth completely, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. We use modern all-ceramic crowns by default, which look and feel like natural teeth without the dark line at the gum that older metal-fused crowns produced.

A bridge replaces a missing tooth (or two adjacent missing teeth) by bonding a custom-made replacement onto the neighbouring teeth as anchors. It's an alternative to a single tooth implant for cases where the neighbouring teeth would benefit from full coverage anyway.

When are crowns and bridges needed?

A crown or bridge is typically the right answer if:

  • A tooth has had a root canal and needs full coverage to prevent fracture
  • A tooth has a large filling that no longer holds the structure together
  • A tooth is broken, cracked or worn down significantly
  • A discoloured or misshapen front tooth needs full coverage that bonding alone won't fix
  • You need to replace a missing tooth and an implant isn't the right call (bridge case)

For replacing missing teeth, an implant is often the longer-lasting alternative to a bridge. We'll compare both at consultation.

The Hacton Dental Care difference.

All-ceramic by default

Modern all-ceramic crowns look and feel like natural teeth and are strong enough for any tooth in your mouth. Old-style metal-fused crowns are no longer the default at Hacton Dental Care.

Custom-made in our lab

Every crown and bridge is made by ceramists working in close partnership with our clinical team. The shape, shade and translucency are matched to your other teeth at every stage.

Conservative tooth preparation

We remove only the structure that genuinely needs replacing. Modern bonding techniques mean we preserve more natural tooth than older crown methods required.

Honest about implant alternatives

For replacing a missing tooth, a bridge requires the two neighbouring teeth to be ground down, while an implant doesn't. We will compare both options with you so you can choose what's right for your case.

Long-term written guarantee

Every crown and bridge carries a written guarantee subject to attending your routine reviews and following the aftercare advice.

Same clinician throughout

The same dentist designs your crown or bridge, prepares the tooth, takes the impression and fits the final restoration.

Real patients, real results.

Nervous about a crown or bridge?

The most common worry is "will it hurt when the tooth is being prepared?". The whole procedure is under local anaesthetic so you genuinely won't feel any discomfort during the prep itself. The temporary crown or bridge is comfortable to wear for the two weeks while your final restoration is being made.

We'll go through every step at your consultation so there are no surprises on the day. If you're particularly anxious, sedation is available.

Crown and bridge questions, answered.

How much does a crown cost at Hacton Dental Care?

An all-ceramic crown is from £850 and a full gold crown is from £950, both custom-made in our lab and bonded by your dentist.

How much does a dental bridge cost?

Bridges are priced per unit (per tooth), from £850 per unit, so a 3-unit bridge to replace one missing tooth is typically priced at 3 units.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

A well-made crown or bridge typically lasts 10 to 20 years before needing replacement, depending on bite forces, hygiene and the underlying tooth health.

Is having a crown or bridge fitted painful?

No - the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic so it is painless at the time, with most patients reporting only minor sensitivity for a few days afterwards.

What's the difference between a crown and a bridge?

A crown covers a single damaged tooth, while a bridge spans a gap by bonding to the neighbouring teeth (or implants) to replace one or more missing teeth.

Is a bridge or an implant better for a missing tooth?

Implants don't require the neighbouring teeth to be reshaped (a bridge does) and typically last longer, but bridges are faster, lower cost and less invasive - we'll compare both at consultation.

Will my crown look natural?

Yes - all-ceramic crowns are custom-shaped and shade-matched to your other teeth so they blend invisibly with your natural smile.
