What are fixed braces?

Fixed braces are small brackets bonded to the front of each tooth, connected by a thin wire that gradually moves your teeth into a planned position. Adjustments every four to eight weeks tighten the wire and progress the movement, and most cases finish in twelve to twenty-four months.

Unlike clear aligners, fixed braces work continuously, twenty-four hours a day, with no removable parts to forget. That makes them the most predictable option for cases that need precise bite correction, large gaps closing, or significant rotation of stubborn teeth.

Are fixed braces right for me?

Fixed braces tend to be the right answer if you:

  • Have severe crowding, rotation or large gaps
  • Need bite correction (overbite, underbite, crossbite)
  • Have had previous orthodontic relapse and need precise movement
  • Are happy with brackets being visible (or want the tooth-coloured option)
  • Are willing to attend monthly adjustment appointments

If your case is mild to moderate and you want a more discreet, removable option, Invisalign is usually the better starting point.

The right tool for complex cases

Fixed braces remain the gold-standard for cases that need precise, predictable tooth movement, especially severe rotations, bite correction and large gaps. Where Invisalign would compromise the result, fixed braces deliver.

A choice of look

You can have either traditional silver-grey metal brackets (often the choice for younger teenagers) or tooth-coloured ceramic brackets that blend in much better against the tooth.

3D-planned, not guesswork

Every case is planned from a 3D digital scan and full-face photographs, so the projected end position of every tooth is mapped before the first bracket is bonded.

Same team start to finish

You see the same orthodontic clinician at every adjustment appointment. No relay handoffs, no uncertainty about what was agreed last time.

Retention built into the plan

Every fixed brace plan includes the retainers that hold the new position permanently. Without them the teeth start to move back, which is the most common reason orthodontic results fail long-term.

Honest about Invisalign

Invisalign is more comfortable and more discreet, and for the majority of adult cases it is the better option. We will only recommend fixed braces where the case genuinely needs them.

Real patients, real results.

Nervous about fixed braces?

The thing patients worry about most is how the braces will look during treatment, especially in their day-to-day work. The tooth-coloured ceramic option is much more discreet than the metal version, and many patients find that within a fortnight they have completely forgotten about them.

The discomfort settles within a few days of each adjustment, and at every appointment your same clinician is there to answer the same questions you might have asked last time. We'll show you the projected outcome on screen before you commit, with no pressure to proceed on the day.

Fixed brace questions, answered.

How long do fixed braces take?

Most adult cases take 12 to 24 months in fixed braces, with simpler cases finishing in 6 to 9 months and complex bite correction occasionally running to 30 months.

Do fixed braces hurt?

The brace itself doesn't hurt, but the teeth feel sore for two or three days after each adjustment as they start to move, which we manage with standard pain relief.

What can I eat with fixed braces?

You can eat normally with a few exceptions - hard, sticky and chewy foods (toffee, hard nuts, ice) can damage the brackets and wires and are best avoided.

Are fixed braces visible?

The metal version is visible from a normal conversation distance, while the ceramic (tooth-coloured) version is much more discreet but still visible at close range.

Can I have fixed braces on the NHS at Hacton Dental Care?

Hacton Dental Care is fully private, so all orthodontic treatment is privately funded with 0% finance and membership discounts available.

Will I need a retainer afterwards?

Yes, retainers are essential to hold the new position permanently, and a retainer plan is included in every fixed brace treatment we provide.

Can I get fixed braces if I'm an adult?

Yes, around half of our fixed brace patients are adults, and the treatment works equally well at any age provided your gums and bone are healthy.
