When should my child first see the dentist?

The recommended age for a first dental visit is around 1 year old, or when the first baby teeth appear, whichever comes first. The aim of these very early visits is to get your child comfortable with the dental setting before any treatment is ever needed.

After the first visit, most children are seen every 6 months for routine check-ups. Catching issues early, building the routine of regular visits and giving parents practical brushing advice are far more important than any specific treatment in the early years.

Is a children's appointment right for us?

A children's visit at Hacton Dental Care is the right call if:

  • It's your child's first ever dental visit (around age 1 or first baby tooth)
  • You want a warm, low-pressure starting point for a previously nervous child
  • Your child needs a routine 6-monthly check-up
  • Your child has a specific concern (a wobbly tooth, a chip, sensitivity)
  • You want orthodontic assessment from age 7 to 8 onwards

If your child has a dental emergency or is in pain, call us so we can fit you in for an urgent appointment.

The Hacton Dental Care difference.

First visits are about meeting us, not treatment

A child's first dental visit at Hacton Dental Care is about meeting our team, sitting in the chair, going for a ride up and down, having a count of their teeth and going home with a sticker. Not extensive treatment, not pressure, just a warm welcome.

Same friendly clinician every visit

Your child sees the same dentist or hygienist at every appointment, so they build trust with someone they know rather than meeting a new face each time.

Honest about preventive care

Most children don't need much beyond regular check-ups, fluoride applications and good brushing technique. We focus on teaching technique and preventing problems rather than treating after the fact.

A team that knows children

Our clinicians have specific experience working with children and adapt their approach to each child's age, personality and confidence level.

Built around school timetables

Appointments can be scheduled around school where possible, with after-school slots available for working families.

We don't push treatment that isn't needed

If your child has a tiny cavity that's better watched than treated, we'll watch it. The principle is the same as for adults: don't fix what doesn't need fixing.

Nervous parent? Nervous child?

Many parents tell us they're more anxious about their child's dental visit than the child is. Our team has years of experience making first visits warm, calm and pressure-free. There's no expectation that anything has to be done at a first visit beyond a count of teeth and a sticker.

For older children with established dental anxiety, we can plan longer appointments, build in breaks and offer the same nervous patient support we provide for adults.
